London »
London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It produces 17% of the UK's GDP and the City of London is one of the world's major financial centres. The former capital of a global empire, London is pre-eminent in the culture, communications, politics, finance, and arts of its country, and has considerable influence worldwide. Alongside New York City, Paris, and Tokyo, London is often listed among the four major global cities.
London is the most populous city within city limits in the European Union with an official population of 7.5 million and has a metropolitan area population of between 12 and 14 million people. Its diverse population draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures and religions, speaking over 300 different languages.
It is an international transport hub, with five international airports and a large port. It serves as the largest aviation hub in the world, and its main airport, the multi-terminal Heathrow, carries more international passengers than any other airport in the world. It also has Europe's largest underground railway system when measured by route length.
I've been living and working in London for almost four years now and there has never been a dull moment. On the 28th of February 2004 I arrived at London Heathrow Airport and soon after going through passport control found myself finding my way down to the "Underground". Once there I got on a packed (Piccadilly Line) train to Green Park where I had to change for another train (Jubilee Line) to get to my what would be "home".... Bermondsey.
Centrally located on the south side of the Thames, immediately opposite the Cities of
London and Westminster, the borough of Southwark reflects the complex socio-economic
profile of the three metropolitan boroughs from which it was formed in 1965 – Bermondsey,
Southwark and Camberwell.
